TEXINS: A LOOK BACK

Texins began as an annual Christmas party. Over the years, Texins has grown and changed to meet the needs of TIers and their families. Today, Texins is one of the finest recreation programs in the industry.

1953: The original constitution and bylaws of the Texins Association are adopted.

1958: Texins members vote to abolish the TI-paid Christmas party in favor of an annual contribution to the Texins Association's Facilities Fund. TI President Pat Haggerty presents a check for $32,000 to the Texins Board of Directors. This was the beginning of Texins as it is today.

1959: For the estimated 2,140 TIers and family members, Texins expands into a program with 17 clubs and athletic activities.

1960: Texins hires its first full-time manager and incorporates as a non-profit organization. After months of negotiation and property inspection, Texins secures a 20-year renewable lease at Lake Texoma.

1961: TI moves to the Expressway Site and gives the use of an existing farmhouse on Valley View Road. The building is used by the radio, bridge, dance, astronomy, rock, camera and model train clubs and for general group meetings. TIers vote to use money in the Facilities Fund to acquire a local recreational facility.

1962: Texins purchases land in Allen, Texas, and the Rod and Gun Club is established.

1963: Ground-breaking for the Texins Activity Center on the Expressway Site begins. The half-million-dollar, eight-acre recreational center for Dallas-area employees and their families opens in January 1964.

1979: Texins hires its first full-time fitness director and begins to develop what will eventually grow into one of industry's most comprehensive health and wellness programs.

1984: The Dallas Texins expands its facilities with the addition of a modern fitness center that includes lockers, showers, a sauna, steam rooms and whirlpools.

1986: The first Corporate Olympic Games are presented to TIers.

1987: More than 900 people attend the grand opening of the Spring Creek Activity Center located in Plano, Texas.

1991: TI Chairman, President and CEO Jerry Junkins and the Dallas Texins Association win the two top honors from the National Employee Services and Recreation Association. This is the first time a company has won both honors in the same year. Jerry was named employer of the year because TI strongly supports employee services and recreation programs. Texins was recognized for having the nation's best overall program providing employees with opportunities to develop physically, mentally and socially.

1993: Texins new Training and Development team kicks off their highly successful experiential learning program called "Team Building." Over the next three years, more than 4500 TI employees and contract employees participate in this highly effective training class.

1995: The world-class $8.5 million facility opens on January 2, 1995. "Father of Aerobics," Dr. Kenneth Cooper provides the opening ceremony address acknowledging the Dallas Activity Center as " truly world-class and the best corporate fitness facility."

2000: The Dallas Texins completes an extensive renovation which includes upgraded equipment and expanded services.  The project, which cost $1.25 million and began last December, was completed in May.  The renovation resulted in a variety of changes and improvements including: 117 new pieces of strength training and cardiovascular equipment, a new high-tech entertainment system provides 10 stations, a massage therapy area and a power cycling room where added, a new juice bar is part of the newly remodeled lounge overlooking the pool, a new pro shop, and several other amenities including additional programming for children.
