Two-Player 6-6-6 Tournament Rules
Description: Two-player teams compete in a variety of formats. The first six holes are played as a scramble, the next six holes are played as best ball and the last six holes use the alternate shot format.
U.S.G.A. rules apply unless otherwise stated herein.
Men play from the WHITE (or equivalent) tees. Women play from the RED (or equivalent) tees.
Scramble format: Each team member tees off and the team chooses the best result as the position to hit their next shot. This procedure is followed until the hole is completed.
One club-length improvement is allowed anywhere on the course except in hazards or on the green. The ball should be positioned with the club head, not hand-placed. The second player should attempt to drop his/her ball as close as possible to the spot where the first player hit and position the ball with the club head to maintain the same lie and stance.
If a team is playing from a sandtrap, the first player should play the ball as it lies, subsequent players can rake and then hand-place the ball near the position where the first player hit.
If both players' balls are lost or in the woods on the same shot, they should proceed per the general lost ball/woods rules and choose the best result under the circumstances.
If both players' balls appear to be out of bounds on the same shot, they should both hit provisionals.
Best Ball format: Each team member plays his/her own ball for all six holes. Each player is allotted a portion of his/her individual handicap to determine the number of strokes received on each hole. The team score for each hole is the low net score of the team members.
Alternate Shot format: Each player hits a tee shot, then one of the shots is chosen as the ball in play. The team member whose tee shot was not chosen hits the next shot with the ball in play and the remaining shots are alternated between team members until the ball is holed.
Each team member's tee shot must be used at least 3 times during the Alternate Shot competition. It doesn't matter in which order the tee shots are used.
For both Alternate Shot and Best Ball: Play the ball as it lies with the exception that a ball sitting IN a weather crack (i.e. more than 1/3 of the ball below the level of the ground) may be lifted and placed at the nearest point of relief (like within two or three inches) no closer to the hole.
Each team shall hole out all putts. In the interest of speeding up play during the Scramble, if the first player putts to within tap-in distance (six inches or less), he/she may go ahead and hole the tap-in rather than marking. If the second player holes the original putt, the lower score counts. For Best Ball, if one team member is headed for a large number and hopelessly out of contention for the team score, he/she can pick up.
If the weather or course conditions are suspect, the head pro or other golf course official should be consulted regarding other exceptions such as improving lies or lift-clean-and-place.
No Shows: If one team member fails to show, the single player will be allowed to:
The "team" handicap will be adjusted as necessary.
Late Arrivals/Early Departures: If one team member arrives late or must leave prior to completion of the round, the remaining player shall proceed per the No Show rules. No team handicap adjustment will be made unless one member misses all 6 holes of a particular format.
Course Handicaps
================
1. Calculate the Course Handicap for each participant as follows:
(USGA slope rating for tees being played)
(Current USGA handicap index) X -----------------------------------------
113
Round this result to the nearest whole number with .50 or more rounding up,
.49 or less rounding down.
Example: A player with a 7.8 index playing from the blue tees, which have
a slope rating of 126, would have a calculated Course Handicap of:
7.8 X 126/113 = 8.697 or 9
2. Make tee rating adjustments as necessary if participants are playing from
different tees.
Case 1 - Blue (or White) tees rated higher than Red tees:
Subtract Red rating from Blue rating and add the result to the
Course Handicaps of all participants playing from the Blue tees.
Round this result to the nearest whole number with .50 or more rounding up,
.49 or less rounding down.
Example: Blue rating 70.6, Red rating 68.1.
70.6 - 68.1 = 2.5 or 3
Add 3 strokes to the Course Handicaps of all Blue tee players.
Case 2 - Red tees rated higher than Blue (or White) tees:
Subtract Blue rating from Red rating and add the result to the
Course Handicaps of all participants playing from the Red tees.
Round this result to the nearest whole number with .50 or more rounding up,
.49 or less rounding down.
Example: Blue rating 71.4, Red rating 72.2.
72.2 - 71.4 = 0.8 or 1
Add 1 stroke to the Course Handicaps of all Red tee players.
Tournament Handicaps (Only rocket scientists need apply for tourney director)
====================
Scramble portion:
Divide the Course Handicap of the lower handicapped player by 9.
Divide the Course Handicap of the higher handicapped player by 18.
Sum the two numbers without rounding to determine team handicap.
Alternate Shot portion:
Divide the Course Handicap of both players by 6.
Sum the two numbers without rounding to determine team handicap.
Best Ball portion:
Multiply the Course Handicap of each participant by .8, then divide
by 3. Round the result to the nearest whole stroke with .500 or more
rounding up, .499 or less rounding down.
Apply all of the resulting strokes to the six holes to be played in
the Best Ball format beginning with the lowest handicapped (hardest)
hole. Those receiving more than six strokes shall receive additional
strokes as necessary, beginning with the lowest handicapped hole.
Examples: A player receiving 3 strokes shall receive them on the 3
lowest handicapped (hardest) of the six Best Ball holes.
A player receiving 8 strokes shall receive a stroke for
all six Best Ball holes plus an additonal stroke for each
of the 2 lowest handicapped (hardest) holes of the six.
Combined team handicap:
Sum the team handicaps calculated for the Scramble and Alternate
Shot portions, then round to the nearest whole stroke with .500 or
more rounding up, .499 or less rounding down.
Team score:
Sum the gross scores from the Scramble and Alternate Shot portions
with the team low net score from the Best Ball portion, then subtract
the combined team handicap calculated in the previous step.
